You have to distinguish real speed and marketing speed :) The FPGAs are
faster than they used to be and have big capacity, but you can pack 10
times more stuff to ASIC and make it 10 times faster (of course everything
depends on application).

Biggest disadvantage of big FPGAs is the price. ~$1000 is quite good price
estimate in volume for the state of the art FPGAs.
