Neat idea, but...  Can we get an option to do it "the old way"?  To me,
the concept of re-reading configuration files every time I change the
directory is alien.  You re-read the configuration when I *tell* you to
do it.

If I understand Stuart's motivation for these changes, I suspect that
missing symbols can be fixed by including "." in the symbol and library
search paths.  This way, the CWD is always searched for symbols. (If the
symbols live in a subdirectory, then use a relative path instead of an
absolute one).
