I think I will first have to understand how hierarchies are intended to
function in gschem.

I didn't get up/down hierarchies to work, and when I started tracing code.
I think I see what is happening: The Down Schematic seems to look for
files in the symbol file directories, just like Down Symbol does.

Is this intentional?

I do not really understand this. I would have though that Down Schematic first
and foremost would look in the same directory as the current schematic,
and probably stay away from the symbol directories. I would very much to
have any files (i.e schematics) connected to a certain project in one
place (using CVS to track versions), which is certainly NOT where I want
the symbol library to reside.

When making sub-sheets, I presume I will have to make a symbol for each
sheet, and then naming it appropriately or use source=. These sub-sheets
and symbols would certainly reside in basically the same directory as the
top sheet.

So additonally, I would like the Down Symbol to look in the directory of the
current page first, then in the standard places. And add-component should
give easy access to the current directory as well as the standard places.

Is there something here I have completely misunderstood?

Talking about obvious things I have probably overlooked/misunderstood:

How do you see if snap mode is on?

How do you access the gschem.txt and other help documents from gschem?
