What are the ways of combining/merging gschem schematics into larger files?

For instance: I have two schematics.  I want to add them together in
gschem, make a few changes (add some parts), and then layout a PCB design
including the two.

What's a good way to do it?

I'm inclined to text-edit the files together and sort it out later but it
occurs to me that the schematics will then be on top of one another.

I would either ---

(1) make a top-level schematic and use a hierarchical block for the
    the two schematics

or

(2) Create an new schematic and then use the copy buffers to
to copy from each of the old schematics.
