News and changelog

I have reached the point where I am building new isos here for local
testing.

Until they are ready you can try Indy's RPMS at
ftp://belegost.seul.org:/independence/Indy-7.1/differential
(only for a couple days)
after that it will be:
ftp://moria.seul.org/pub/independence/Indy-7.1/differential

What is new in this second snapshot:
-New abiword: 0.9. This version seems to be a decent word processor
(not in the same class of StarOffice or MS Word but usable). Previous
abiword was very, very basic.
-new kernel (of course)
-mozilla 0.9.1: the older mozilla shipped with first snapshot (inherited
from RedHat) was nearly unusable. This one is the first mozilla who
seems
good, however I still recommend Galeon (new in this snapshot) who
happens
to use mozilla's engine but is much lighter and apparently faster.
-Gnome 1.4, nautilus
-Xfree 4.1
-Completely new printing: moved to ghostscript 6.51, newer cups, newer
gimp-print. Since I want Linux attracting would-be artists having Indy
delivering best print possible is a must.
-SpeedTouch (ADSL modem) support: I looked at a mail list dealing with
it
and it seems like very few people are able to make it work (you have to
download and compile several things, HOWTO is incomplete). In addition
of a patched kernel Indy includes all what is needed for SpeedTouch be
it in PPPoA mode or on PPPPoE. Thus what was nearly impossible is
not so difficult on Indy (it will be easy the day we have time
for hacking PPP configurator wand make it deal with this kind of
modems).
Concretely it means people will be able to save
around 150$ since they will be able to use a cheap USB modem instead of
a
classic ADSL modem on ethernet.
-Color management for the Gimp
-A push towards video edition and viewing (bcast2000, xine). My deep
regret
is that Indy still does not have a tool for viewing AVIs. Will be for
next
snapshot
-Rute: I consider it a very good manual
-Dozens of library upgrades required by mozilla or gnome 1.4
-This Indy will replace RedHat logos and introductory web page by an
Indy
one.

Next snapshot will focus on replacing RedHat's installer by the Mandrake
one.
