You don't need (and want) to read about hardware programming unless you
want to write device drivers. I'd say forget both of these books.

Last time I heard of him, Mike Abrash used assembly for *everything*. He's
a genius, but maybe not the best one to learn "normal" and "clean" game
programming from.


At best take some completely generic book about C or C++. Nothing game
specific until you are familiar with the language. 

Stroustrup's "The C++ Programming Language, 3rd Ed." (ISBN 0-201-88954-4
for the english version, but it's also available in german) is *the* book
about C++ (Stroustrup after all created that language). It's perhaps not
the very best book for learning the language, but it will also be useful
later, as it also covers quite advanced topics.

In general, Addison-Wesley and O'Reilly have the best books.
