Why do you want to compile the game yourself, you can simply pick the
static binaries, then all you need to do to run the game is:

export CVSROOT=':pserver:anonymous@dark.x.dtu.dk:/usr/local/cvsroot'
cvs login
# (there is no password, just hit return)
cvs -z3 checkout Games/Pingus

cd Games/Pingus/
wget -c ftp://pingus.seul.org/pub/pingus/betatesting/linux/pingus-current
chmod +x pingus-current
./pingus-current
# Have fun playing it...
