 Great work tracking this down.  To some extent this is still a Mozilla
 problem in that users of the socket transport service need to avoid using
 it in certain ways.

 Does the deadlock still occur if we use buffered sockets?  The combination
 of blocking + unbuffered is unusual.  I don't remember why buffering
 causes problems, but Mike probably does.
