 Roger wants this fixed in 0.2.3.x, but I don't see how that's going to
 happen; it's pretty fragile code.  If there is a simple, obvious fix we
 can apply it, but otherwise I don't see how we can do it safely.  Maybe if
 there's a pretty-simple, nearly-obvious fix that we can allow to percolate
 in 0.2.4.x?
