 A lot of blog posts suggest turning authentication off, rather than using
 cookie authentication.

 Here are some recent exceptions:
 https://stem.torproject.org/_modules/stem/connection.html
 https://airvpn.org/tor/

 But even they provide multiple authentication methods.
