 Two quick ideas/comments to consider:

   (1) Random plausible MAC address(es) for eth0 at least and possibly the
other interfaces prior to bringing them up. By plausible I mean chosen
from a set of MAC blocks for existing router-esque devices by common
vendors that wouldn't be out of the ordinary on the target networks. It
likely isn't trivial to compile a complete list of such, but a sampling of
MACs by off-the-shelf devices might do initially.

   (2) It might be safer to set a default ESSID that is more innocuous than
'torproject'. Informed local 'authorities' may keep an eye out for this
ESSID by various means and its presence could draw unwanted attention and
possibly place the user(s) in danger (depending on the severity of the
local situation). You could select a default ESSID based on the random
MAC from (1), e.g. 'Linksys' if you happened to end up in the appropriate
Linksys block of MACs. That's probably more work than it's worth,
however, so may be best to instead select something ridiculously general
like 'router' and let the user change it if they like.
