Comment (by cypherpunks):

 peak time was at Don Jun 15 04:21:40 CEST 2017

 your smem logs say that
 - RSS system total: 0.33%
 - tor used very little memory but a lot of swap space (>270MB per process)
 (which very likely causes your system to hang completely)
 (again you do not provide any swap in/out graphs)

 your /proc/meminfo says:
 - 3664 MB memory used (does not show in smem -> kernel memory?)
 - 679 MB SWAP used

 What is your swapiness?

 Possible next items:
 - add another smem output to list kernel memory:
 - {{{smem -kwt}}}
 - Try disabling tor's swap usage: {{{ DisableAllSwap 1 }}}
 I guess this will kill tor earlier but prevent the extreme
 swaping/trashing.
 - try to reproduce on clean system with same relay keys

 - guess I was wrong when I said tor might be using more memory before it
 was killed
