Comment:

 Large merge this last week (bc0e578) progressed this quite a bit, adding
 classes and tests for the descriptor reader and server descriptors. I'm
 gonna resolve this ticket since it has grown to a point of being unwieldy,
 and continuing work will be assigned more narrowly focused tickets.
