 Ok. Installed it from where though? I still think the most likely
 explanation is that you have the wrong package for your arch (e.g. because
 you're using the wrong deb repository for your arch).

 More broadly, since this is a bug with some package, you're probably going
 to need to report it there. If you can build Tor from source and show a
 bug, it fits well in this bugtracker, but for the "somebody else did
 unknown things to Tor and then you're trying to run their thing" case,
 it's not something we can help with directly.
