 OK, I have tried turning off plugins, starting with all off except
 Torbutton, and the problem seems to be a combination of Torbutton and Tab
 Mix Plus (at least the 0.3.8.2 version of Tab Mix Plus).

 Not sure why these two plugins conflict, but that seems to be the
 combination that causes the loss of GUI customizations.

 Will try an older version of Tab Mix Plus, if I can get one, and report
 whether the same problem exists.
