i use thunderbird with tor to send gmail email just fine. see? use
SSL smtp.gmail.com port 465. you may have to re-try with a new
circuit, but it works eventually.

It works now with the settings you mentioned above.
But strangely enough, now it is working with old settings, suggested in
Gmail help for Thunderbird, namely: TLS, Port 587.
