Dear all,

I am happy to announce version 0.9.99.0 of the Polipo caching web
proxy. This is the first public release candidate for what will
become either 0.10 or 1.0.

and an experimental Windows binary on

Major user-visible changes
**************************

Polipo can now grok arbitrarily large HTTP headers (you shouldn't see
any more ``couldn't find end of headers'' messages).

It is now possible to reconfigure a running Polipo from the
/polipo/config? pages (thanks to Theo Honohan).

It is now possible to request that given URLs be treated as uncachable
by listing them in an /etc/polipo/forbidden file (thanks to Joachim Haga).

Polipo can speak to Squid-style redirectors such as adzapper[1].

Polipo can now go through a Socks proxy such as tor[2].

The complete list of changes is available on

  http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/polipo/CHANGES.text

Incompatible changes
********************

If you are upgrading from the 0.9 branch, please be aware that there
are a few incompatible changes in this version.

1. /polipo/index?, /polipo/recursive-index? and /polipo/servers? are
disabled by default.  Set

  disableIndexing=false
  disableServersList=false

to revert to the previous behaviour.

2. ``Via'' headers are not generated by default. Set

  disableVia=false

to revert to the previous behaviour.

3. cacheIsShared is now true by default. If you're the only user of
your cache, you may want to set

  cacheIsShared=true

to get a slight boost in performance.

4. CHUNK_SIZE now defaults to 8192 on 64-bit architectures, which
should cause a modest performance boost, especially on Alpha. You may
want to either increase chunkHighMark to compensate, or recompile with
CHUNK_SIZE=4096 if you're running on a 64-bit arch and don't have
a lot of memory.

5. The scheme for naming files in the on-disk cache has changed
somewhat. This doesn't affect programs that scan the on-disk cache
(such as polipo -x and polipo-trimcache), but will break any scripts
that are actually aware of the naming of the files in the disk cache.

Windows port
************

There is now an experimental port to native Windows (thanks to Dan
Kennedy) in addition to the well-tested and stable Cygwin port.
Please see the file README.Windows (included in both the source
tarballs and the Windows zips) for more information on running Polipo
under Windows.

Enjoy,

                                        Juliusz Chroboczek
