i just used the free viewer "irfanview" this is the best
image viewer i've seen on windows. the only option it offers
for saving PNGs is the gzip compression level, it defaults
to 6 (which i used) but can range 1 - 9.

this viewer loads a lot of image types, and i'd be shocked
if it was using something besides libpng.

i tried bringing up the info on the original and new PNG files
and they both looked similar, (both compressed with PNG ZIP). i
didn't notice any differences.

the image seems to load fine for a few people on the SDL
newsgroup. i'll have to try building some debug versions
of the libraries and running something under the debugger
at a later time.
