For that $50-$100 you get food and accommodation for the duration of the Jam.

As for your other point, well I guess that's how OLPC works. None of the 
current developers will be actually using the laptop (though a lucky few do 
actually have one).

You don't get the full system capabilities when you run a "system image" 
installation -- you won't get the touchpad, special screen, mesh networking,  
camera, other input devices, etc.

There will be hardware at the Jam for developers to run on.
