Re: [school-discuss] Open Source Project

hello,

re : I am the Academic Technology Specialist at a small university, and am
considering implementing an open source test project involving about ten
faculty members. My goal for the project will be to evaluate the potential
for open source software in a higher-ed environment.

i think it is critical that you become completely familiar with linux before
involving any other personnel, as you are responsible for support. there are
100s of ways to do everything in open source, and, if you don't limit this
view to things you are comfortable with, well, into the valley of tears ...

opening with a single "universal" application for the group will position you
to plan a more comprehensive second phase. picking something the 10 subjects
express real curiosity about will improve chances of success.

i would plan on 250-300 manhours alone over at least three months before
involving anyone else. at that point, you'll be in a more focused position.

take a look at linux apps and freshmeat to get a sense of what's available -
do it like a grad student heading for the library. everything you want is
available.

mandrake is redhat. use what you have at hand. i prefer redhat.

suse is a great distribution as well.

good luck,
