http://www.groupserver.org/ might be a bit more amenable to use by children because of the way it manages threads and discussions.

i use mailman too, but it is very tightly wound around the idea of the way a mail-list should be for somewhat advanced users. groupserver was built for people to become more involved in political discourse, for new users who aren't embedded in listserves already, so it is a bit different.
