well said... Â what I find in many of the posts is a rush to "do something". ÂI think any great action needs time to plan, which means that we need an agreed upon strategy.

just started this process in his three part challenge

List 1, defined problems (duplication of efforts, distribution, etc)
List 2, defined resources (many people said they could contribute in different ways)Â
List 3, proposed solutions (SchoolForge as clearing house, supporting efforts both existing and in development)Â

So far we have not defined aÂproblemÂyet we have seemingly come up with solutions... Â Many people seem eager to write a textbook... Â yet we have not followedÂJustin'sÂsuggestions in ensuring efforts are not duplicated, thus wasted... Â Further is it a textbook that is most needed? Â Here I earlier suggested doing a needs assessment. ÂWhy not do a short study of what is available, what the needs are and what our skill set may be to help bridge the gaps.Â

As one who has consumed open content in its many forms and a generator andÂcontributorÂtoÂacademic open content over the past 15 years or so I have seen hundreds of open content websites all with varying and overlapping goals.Â

Anyhow, for fun Âi was just downloading someÂtextsÂfrom the Open college Textbook project... Âsee here Âhttp://collegeopentextbooks.org/opentextbookcontent/open-textbooks-by-subject/education

As far as I can see they have a very healthy collection of textbooks, but the question may be... what is needed in the world to extend the reach even further. ÂIn Laos we are facing a major issue with localization. Getting such texts translated would be a major undertaking.Â

just my 2 cents

Agreed, mostly. However, my own experience, especially in the classroom, is that people / groups rush to "solutions" before understanding the problem fully enough and therefore preclude anything really new. I acknowledge the need to shape the data so far and see what's there. That's why I want a wiki. I could say a lot more, but I hear the call for moving on. The domain should resolve by my morning and I'll install the wiki and do my share of idea-organizing while inviting collaboration.

Also, I don't see that starting a phase of developing a plan of action would oppose the creative / brainstorm process. Many great plans start out as one thing and turn out entirely different by the end. The trick (in my opinion) is getting the team on board and finding strengths weaknesses and where they can contribute. Then if a new idea comes to the table and the old ideas weren't getting traction, the team can adjust.Â

Yes, this seems good ... I don't remember any "solutions" except for "textbooks."Â I'd like to hear an answer your previous question: are we going to make our own or adopt another project and contribute to/ complement it?

Well textbooks are the end, but the solutions are the various means. Textbooks aren't the 'solution' themselves, as problems have been brought up that are technical, political, pragmatic..etc

I think ultimately that I agree with Laura (LM) in that we are a clearing house of efforts. SchoolForge won't create textbooks, but we will look to find a way to enhance collaboration between the groups that do create textbooks and also try to provide support to the folks that want to create textbooks. For example if I decided I wanted to create a textbook on X, I could come up with some sort of outline and then present it here and perhaps get directed to the community that is already working on this or find someone that offers to help with design / editing.Â

I still think there's room for creativity here -- we want something we're _really_ excited about, don't we?

Right, and I think the response so far has reflected a great deal of excitement. At the same time, this group is so cross functional that I don't see there being one big thing that we all get behind. Which is why I look at how we could fit in as a facilitator for connecting people / resources to the different platforms that are active. Which could be our 'platform'

I also think that a platform could be an important part of what makes it exciting.Â

Speaking for myself, I need to understand what problems we are solving. If I understand the conversation so far, although there are a few ancillary ideas (good ones), the main direction is toward building on Jeremy's call to build textbooks or contribute to/complement/improve one or more existing efforts.

In order to decide whether to follow another group's lead, it would be useful to have a list of efforts, understand what they are each doing.

I've just created a subdomain: wiki.schoolforge.net

Any reason not to try a wikimedia installation for starters? We could start a few lists and tables there to help us see all the ideas.

Taking ideas to action is the real test.Â

I think you're right that the brainstorm delivered, and to look at what the next step is.

I am not volunteering to do this, but I think if someone could go through the discussions and make some lists
List 1, defined problems (duplication of efforts, distribution, etc)
List 2, defined resources (many people said they could contribute in different ways)
List 3, proposed solutions (SchoolForge as clearing house, supporting efforts both existing and in development)

There is a lot more than what I noted, but I think if we could look at what was produced in the discussion then we could start looking at how we can apply the resources to the solutions to solve problems. I think the SchoolForge website could be used well as a clearing house sort of resource similar to the software listing, but towards funneling users towards open content resources.Â

Hi David,

Per the title... you've started a great thread and from Bryant, Jeremy and a number of other contributors came the thread on possibility of generating OA texts, but does anyone ever pick up the ball and take ownership of the projects? This is potentially an enormous undertaking with equally enormous benefits and impacts on students worldwide. More importantly, with the people I've seen here already, it has enough willing contributors to see the light of day.

Is there any sort of structure that would allow me to see how this comes about other than... I can put a little piece here on DNA or a Basic German Grammar sort of thing? For example, Micah just put in a piece about using volunteers from a whole group, Tim talked about his expertise etc... and this is just amazing... but I don't yet see how this all comes together as a project or is that something that you or someone who has been here a little longer pulls together? In other words is what I'm seeing more in line with a brainstorming session, followed by a high level plan etc etc etc.

Again... sorry for the questions, probably stemming from my project manager days a lifetime ago... I would just like to be able to contribute in a meaningful way where possible.

Cheers
