[school-discuss] [Fwd:[IIEP] Another forum]

I don't generally copy messages to the IIEP mailing list to the schoolforge-discuss list, but this one looked as though it might be interesting to some of the folks here too. Discuss it if you want, but if you need to respond to the writer send email to s.dantoni@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, not to me.

Dear Colleagues,

=20

Over the past year, IIEP has been involved in the planning and creation
of a Community of Interest on Open Educational Resources (OER). And, in
fact, a number of you have also participated in the deliberations of
this group.

=20

OER can be seen as somewhat parallel to the FOSS movement, and related
to open content, and the tools and standards for sharing. UNESCO
defines Open Educational Resources as:

=20

"the open provision of educational resources, enabled by information and
communication technologies, for consultation, use and adaptation by a
community of users".

=20

There is interest in the OER community in knowing what lessons the FOSS
movement might have for the OER movement, and what FOSS solutions exist
for the creation, sharing and adaptation and re-use of OER. Given the
expertise in the FOSS community, we thought that you would have much to
contribute to such a reflection and identification of resources.

=20

Therefore, we propose to hold a structured FOSS for education discussion
forum from 11 September to 6 October 2006. The discussion will be
divided in two sessions:

=20

Session 1 Latest trends and developments in the use of FOSS for
education and higher education (since the 2004 forum)

=20

Session 2 Identification of FOSS solutions for OER creation, management
and dissemination.

=20

We propose to create a synopsis of the discussion with the main messages
to convey to the OER community, and then link both communities in a
third session, so that both groups can have a brief interaction.

=20

           Session 3 FOSS/OER communities discussion - 16-27 October
2006

=20

We will send more information about the forum in late August. In the
meantime suggest that you might wish to consult the documents from the
OER discussion, which can be found on the Forums section of the IIEP web
site at http://www.unesco.org/iiep/virtualuniversity/forums.php and a
wiki at http://oerwiki.iiep-unesco.org/index.php?title=3DMain_Page .

=20

Please do consider inviting other colleagues to participate in this
broader discussion (invitation attached). Just send their names and
email addresses to us at virtual.university@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with "Join
FOSS" in the subject line, or have them contact us directly at that
address.

=20

We look forward to another forum discussion with all of you (and you are
299 at present).

=20

Until August, and with my best regards,

=20

Susan
