Greetings,

Two reasons (at least) for IRC at the university level. Maybe three.

1. Interviews. I'm taking a class on qualitative research, and desire to
interview someone 120 miles from home. He and I both have IRC capabilities.
We do the interview via chat, and capture the output. Bingo, interview done,
transcript typed.

2. Web based learning. My spouse unit is taking several classes from a
community college in Kansas. (We moved before she could complete her
associates degree, and she would have lost way too many credits if she
transfered to the university here.) The professors have provided IRCs for
class discussions for these internet based courses.

3. I'm doing a project with some other students at Kansas State. IRC makes
it quite easy to collaborate, even though we are separated by many miles.
(Indeed, in the graduate programs, even if we are at the same school, there
may be 250+ miles between class members during the normal course of the week.)

If these personal experiences are of any value, then maybe others will see
the same need.
