Kind of tangential to the topic.

The Mandrake Cooker crew have recently discovered a "magic" combination 
of patches for the 2.6.test9 kernel which makes the multimedia stuff 
(especially; it helps *everything*) run with amazing speed and 
smoothness. Hopefully whatever works this magic will soon be backported 
to the mainstream kernel.

Someone else has been kind enough to start a GPLed driver for the nForce 
chipset network interface, which bodes well for everything working OOtB 
for any future 2.6-based distro. The nForce chipset makes a fairly 
powerful cheap multimedia station.
