Mahara is worth keeping an eye on.  It is not an LMS but rather ILP/ePortfolio software.

I've had a brief drive and it looks extrememly good

Moodle and Sakai appear to be the standards in LMS these days.  Several
higher ed shops have been switching from BB/WebCT to Moodle or Sakai.
