XML to database

In my slight exposure to XML, I've come up with two questions. First,
how are the XML objects stored in whatever data store is used? Do they
have to be parsed and translated into the appropriate data format for,
oh, say PostgreSQL? If so, what does that parsing? I see that James
Clark's SP SGML processor can do XML quite handily and is imbedded in a
number of products. Do we have to write some sort of XML-to-database
processor to do this, or is this something that's built in or is a
relatively trivial task? Roger, is this something the linuxkb list is
thinking about?

Second, how are the XML objects transported? I've come across
<http://www.xmltp.org>, which seems to be working on a transport
protocol specifically for XML data. Is this something we need to be
concerned about, or will one or another of the standard transport
protocols do?
