Re: [seul-edu] Web Based Attendance Tracking report

Hi Emilio,

We are busy developing a system like that for Linux, but the first
release will only be available in the second half of 2001, maybe only
towards the end of the year.

We haven't lauched our project yet, but it might be wise for me to tell
everyone about it in advance in order to avoid duplicate work:

We are a team of three programmers who will be working full-time on
developing a free, open source school management system. The project is
called SchoolTool and is funded by The Shuttleworth Foundation
(www.tsf.org.za). There isn't a website for the project yet, but anyone
interested in this is welcome to contact me.

The system will address things like registering students, timetabling,
attendance, tracking student performance (including outcomes-based),
school budgeting, etc. We are building web functionality into it, while
at the same time making provision for schools that will not have
permanent Internet connectivity. Replication of data from the schools to
districts or states/provinces is core to our design and will enable
management information to be made available to the school / district /
state / national government. We are taking global requirements into
consideration and are designing the system in such a way that it will be
customisable for any country's requirements. We are making the system
scalable to fit the available hardware in a school - from one PC per
school to one per teacher all the way through to one per pupil.

We are busy analysing the requirements for the system, so if you have any
ideas for features that you miss in your current program, please let me
know and we'll include this in our design.
