New computer install problem

I'm sorry to post this here, but you guys were such a big (and fast!)
help last time that I'll do it again.

We just got our second test computer for LINUX. But we can't get LINUX
to
install at all. We boot off the CDROM and run the program, but it gives
us an error. Here is how the apparently relevent part reads:

Partition Check
  hda: hda1 hda2 <hda5>
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
crc error VFS: Cannot open rootdevice 08:22
kernal panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:22

We tried a number of times. This was the error that repeated itself.
There was another error when it first started that said something about
a CRC error. I am guessing this might have something to do with the
CDROM, It is an ATAPI 40 speed CDROM.

The system has 40x CDROM setup as the secondary Slave
A Maxtor 10.1 gig drive (Primary Master)
Gigabyte Motherboard
350Mhz PentiumII
Creative SoundBlaster 64 PCI
ATI 8meg RAGE PRO IIc video card.
21 inch CTX monitor.
