Nupedia-was:Re: [seul-edu] encyclopedia

GNU supports a project for a free, universal encyclopedia.

http://www.nupedia.com

It's licensed under a version of the GPL for documentation, so you can freely
copy, modify, and redistribute it.

You can download it, too:
http://www.nupedia.com/download.html

To get the most recent version, you need to use CVS. (I've followed their
instructions, but it doesn't work.)

We should get someone to distribute a Nupedia CD-ROM.

(BTW, Let's not forget that the original posting was for a school in China.
Internet access in underdeveloped countries can be so slow and/or expensive
as to be unusable. So an encyclopedia accessed over the Internet is
definitely not an option. Apparently there is currently _no_ commercial
enclopedia software that runs natively in Linux. You will probably be able
to run one of the major encyclopedias under Wine, but some features might not
work, it's likely to act buggy, and it will definitely be much slower than
running it natively under Windows. That's why we need something like
Nupedia.)

Best regards,

Jeff Nelson
