[seul-edu] Case Studies

There's been some talk here about documenting case studies of Linux
success stories in schools. I should point out that one of these success
stories has been floating around on this list for a while.

I am a freshman at Caltech, and last year I graduated from Montgomery
Blair High School (http://www.mbhs.edu) in Silver Spring, MD. Linux
actually had a presence at Blair before I became a student. I believe
they started using Linux for web and email serving in 1994. It was a
student-led effort, and it succeeded, thanks to the help of the school's
User Support Specialist. Throughout the years, we had to fight a lot of
battles with the county school system. Just this year, the school system
took our Linux server out of our own building and moved it to their
central office because "security concerns".

While I was a student there, the project now known as AUC (Authenticated
User Community) was started. In fact, the system is currently being
deployed throughout the school this year. I will refer you to a brief
article I wrote at http://auc.sourceforge.net/history.shtml that describes
how the student-run project evolved. On that page, there are links to a
few media articles about the project, including one from the Washington
Post a few years ago.

Anyway, I can provide email addresses to key players still at the school
(both students and helpful teachers) if anyone is interested.

I'm really excited about the momentum that this list is starting to
generate.

Regards,

David Moore
