That is bad luck. I have installed a variety of BSD and Linux systems
hundreds of times. Sometimes they only take 10 minutes to install.

You should consider visiting the closest users group for help. Or pay some
consultant for two hours of time to help you (because two hours pay is
probably better than wasting 18 hours).

Some simple searches on the web will show thousands of webpages that can
teach you. (But maybe that is overwhelming. An introductory book may be
easier.)

Same features under Linux.

Ease of use often depends on what you experience. My children don't/won't
know Windows -- so Linux is/will obviously be easier to use.

Even different versions of Windows don't provide perfect plug-n-play,
auto-detection of "EVERYTHING" and definitely don't include every driver.

Most installers do that for you.

I agree: RPMs are often difficult to use (especially after using easier
NetBSD and Debian packages).

That is interesting. From my experiences and viewpoint, I use open source
Linux and BSD because they save me time -- I can do some much more and
with better efficiency the everyday tasks by using BSD and Linux instead
of Windows. (Now I haven't used Windows for a few years except for a few
minutes every few months.) (I do find desktop publishing easier
using Quark Xpress under Mac OS.)

Good luck,
