The following message comes both in English and Spanish, with the English
version coming second, after the slash sequence (////).

http://redesc.linux.org.mx/

Introducción a Red Escolar

We invite you to visit our ``Red Escolar Linux'' web site, a solution
for distance education with Free Software:
http://redesc.linux.org.mx/

Your address is in the list of contacts we have made by e-mail in the past,
which implies that you were interested in our Red Escolar Linux project.
This motivates us to send you this note.

Our solution is a free project that extends the RedHat 6.0 distribution with
aditional rpm packages and ad hoc applications. This software has as a
mission to automate and ease the installation and configuration of a lab
server and several GNU/Linux graphical workstations suited for school
necessities.

We are looking for volunteers to translate our documentation to English or
other languages and make tests or give opinions in general. We wish that our
work becomes the base for other projects and improve the quality of our
product through the participation of the Free Software community.

If you wish, you can also subscribe to our discussion list or to the news

Introduction to Red Escolar

Red Escolar is an initiative of the mexican government through
the Secretary of Public Education (Secretaría de Educación Pública, SEP),
whose conception was taken care by a multidisciplinary team of the
Latinamerican Institute of the Educative Communication (Instituto
Latinoamericano de la Comunicación Educativa, ILCE) which has been given
special support since the last change made to the federal law of education,
where distance education was recognized as a development area that must be
attended. The purpose of Red Escolar is to boost new interactive learning
environments in support of the educative process. To achieve this, it is
expected to equip the educative community with a general communications and
information system, promoting the use of computing equipment and
telecomunications for the development of educative contents for teaching
support.

The basic operating unit of Red Escolar is the Media Classroom, an area
situated in each school that combines diverse technologies like radio,
television and personal computers tu support education. Each Media Classroom
will have as a minimum five personal computers installed.

The most difficult characteristic to handle in Red Escolar is the magnitude of
the infrastructure that will be needed to develop and to configure in order
to reach the planned user base. It is pretended to reach the totality of the
schools of the country, whose amount goes near the hundred and twenty
thousand. Taking an average of seven machines per school, we get a total of
840,000 equipments. This causes that the cost of the hardware and software
to be installed with it rises with an extreemly steep slope. On the other
side, it becomes a project very vulnerable to obsolesence, because the
amount of hardware to replace in order to run the latest versions of the
installed software will be very high.

Due to the consequences that come with the size of the project, it has been
decided to use Free Software as a solution. Free Software resolves the
problems described in the last parragraph because its cost is reduced to
that of the production of the distribution media and the adjustment of the
diverse programs to the specific needs of the project, being this more an
advantage than an obstacle. Furthermore, the use of this type of software
will bring an immediate solution to other countries that may pretend to
develop a project similar to this. On the other side, it is well known that
Free Software has a much larger obsolesence cycle than that of the
propietary one, as it is maintained and developed by programmers who are
more worried about the effectiveness of its software than the marqueting of
it.
