LinuxConf is just a frontend to editing /etc/* files. By looking at the
documentation for the individual packages/programs, you'll get a fairly
good idea of what the config files are, and how to edit them yourself (man
pages are useful for looking up syntax).

This is a fairly common problem and means that your /etc/X11/XF86Config
isn't properly setup. Your idea of running Xconfigurator is good, although
since it segfaults you'll have to config the file by hand. It can get
frustrating, but it's doable (or just download a stock file from somewhere
and tailore it to your needs by looking up your monitor refresh rates and
inputting the values).
