Mine also. I believe that this small Debian/non-Debian dispute
is mature enough. It is obvious we are not going to remake the
package system, as there is nothing reasonable that dpkg doesn't do.
So we must start either with the dpkg (.deb) packages or
the .rpm packages. If anybody insists (though I see no point in it)
perhaps we might also consider .tgz.

In order to progress, what about voting? Could the list-master arrange for
a means of voting (for example, a mailbox where we only send our votes in
   the subject lines)?

DPKG is more powerful (but not with a big difference) than RPM. But
having used both Debian 1.2 and RedHat 4.1 I think than Debian is a
more elitist distribution than RedHat so I am not convinced than
Debian makes a great starting point for our purpose.

The GUI frontend of RPM is brain damaged (it sucks when you lack a
dependency) but fixing it is not very difficult. Easier than building
one from scratch for DPKG.

Debian 1.3 has 1300 packages (that does not mean 1300 software) but
there are hundreds of RPMs floating throgh the net like the Essentia
RDBMS. The Alien software can convert RPMS into DPKGs but it can also
make the oppposite.

So I vote for RedHat.

Notice than I don't know Debian 1.3 or RedHat 4.2 and still less the
future evolutions.
