Comment (by fmap):

 (I should note that these indices could reasonably be held in memory with
 the node index, further unburdening the response builder. Also, when I
 said "avoids request-time de-serialisation", I meant "avoids request-time
 serialisation", though moving the parsing away from request time will help
 both.)
