 (this is a random anon, not the person who wrote the big message above)

 I installed TorBirdy as a fresh XPI and via. Thunderbird's add-on manager.
 I had zero add-ons or plugins installed besides TorBirdy. In both install
 cases Thunderbird failed to load.
