Comment(by cri):

 Setting "browser.tab.animate" to false in "about:config" speeds things up
 a bit (maybe you could make this a default setting?)

 Also, I noticed that the sluggishness happens especially with some
 websites, so maybe this is not just a plain firefox bug.
