I don't think it should. Rather, all reported problems should be fixed to
be portable accross different platforms. Remember, Linux is not the only
UNIX.

Please don't play with the canvas stuff much, it's about as old as your
son. And like your son, it is probably not very mature :). Similarly, it
is fragile :). I have just started working on it, and I'm not sure why it
is being put into the releases. Maybe it should be exculded until it is in
an alpha state - its incompleteness and dysfunctionality could reflect
very poorly on the whole project.
If you think it is an interesting preview to include the canvas stuff, I
think it is fine. But maybe there should be a disclaimer that says that
the code has just been started and is only there as a sneak preview.
