Actually new Altera and Xilinx chips are very similiar. The logic
element structure is almost identical. The biggest differences are in the
routing matrix. At least with RTL VHDL that is targeted for FPGA the
results are quite similiar (assumes 4 input luts etc.).

There are some more exotic FPGA structures available, but the big ones are
quite similiar. At least this is my experience with these new chips.
