Just noticed this mentioned on the Freenet mailing list:

The most interesting idea here is the way file searches are done - instead
of having any kind of central server, everyone has a file of "friends." 
When you want to find a file, you ask your friends if they have it.
They ask their friends. Their friends ask their friends, and so on to 
six degrees of separation. 

They don't seem to handle anonymity, though.
