Initial Comment:
The second thing what Franz Hottas has done is a highlighting mode for gEDA-gaf:

Another new feature for gschem is a net highlighting mode. I've
instructed my student to implement such a
function into gschem.

common gschem behaviour:
- target to some net and click with left mouse button
- now the net segment should be highlighted in orange

new functional description:
- target to some net and klick with left mouse button
- now the net segment an all the physical and by name connected net's
will be highlighted
- if you click again only the segment will be highlighted (toggle:
click
once -> new beh., click again -> common beh.)

I've got an update from git today (20090805) and i've compiled gschem.
The advanced net selection feature works very well.
BUT: If there are net's connected by name (and not physically) the selection mode fails!
