gEDA-bug: [Bug 799926] Re: gschem grid barely visible with lightbg theme
Way back when, I got to work with someone who was way more knowledgeable
about such things than I, and he made an interesting comment. If you
have a pure white background, you can't put anything brighter than it on
the screen. Even with only a 95% grey background, a pure white area
appears visually "brighter". In gschem, the 95% grey main window is
visually distinct from the pure-white toolbar and status bars, for
example.
I just checked the current gschem lightbg on all four of my monitors,
from an out of calibration cheapie to my $2000 perfect-color main
monitor. The grid lines have similar contrast across all of them, and
it's just right (IIRC I argued for the subtle grid lines too, back
when). It wasn't just Peter's preferences, we tested it across a range
of monitors before settling on what we have now.
As for desktops, there are ZERO apps on my desktop that are 100% pure
white. Most are either 95% grey or a pale beige (#ffeedd is one of my
favorites).
Note also: consumers prefer "warm white" light bulbs over "cool white".

Title:
gschem grid barely visible with lightbg theme
Status in GPL Electronic Design Automation tools:
Fix Committed
Bug description:
The grid lines of gschem are pretty low key with the current gschem-
colormap-lightbg. This depends of course on the contrast and
brightness settings of the monitor. However, grid lines are hardly
visible on four of five TFT monitors I have access to, when settings
are in default position. There is almost no difference visible between
minor and major grid lines.
Find attached a patch to the lightbg color profile for slightly more
pronounced grid lines.
