John and Charles,
I tried correcting the text in the .fonts.conf file to what you told me
to write in the first place, "</dir>"; and, both programs load perfectly.
I also tried removing the .fonts.conf file and both programs load
perfectly. Either way works.
Thanks so much for helping me get up and running again!
