Note that you should put into the README.* that automake 1.9.x is required, hence I tested with 1.7, and it was not working properly.

automake -- ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/automake/
The developers use the 1.9.* versions of automake. Older
versions have not been as well tested (or tested at all).to this:
