You should be aware that Ubuntu is about the least developer-ready Linux 
distro in existence.  Out of the box, you need to install several 
packages to even compile 'hello world'.   I'll spare you my opinion 
about the many ways in which that philosophy is utterly broken.

I suggest that your first order of business is to make sure that a 
reasonable development environment is installed by spending some time 
surfing the package manager installing development tools and trying 
simpler builds before taking on gEDA.  Ultimately, the install will go 
smoothly once you have a proper development environment.
