It really is pretty simple.  Op-amps don't have a ground 
terminal, just two inputs, an output, and two power pins.  
Depending on the application, I have seen any of them grounded. 
Even if you have both plus and minus power, there is no absolute 
rule that says they need to be equal.

You only really need bipolar power if you want the output to 
swing both positive and negative.  If you are building an audio 
amp, you can get around this by a capacitor on the output.
