No, electrons can travel in both directions, it just how many can go
which way, at the same time. Forward bias the diode, and lots of
electrons are moving, reverse bias it, and very few are.
Why do the atoms stay the same when hit by electron from one side and something
permanently changes in them when hit from the other?
No, the breakdown means the device is damaged, broken, poof, no more
magic smoke to play with.
