gerbv /does/ work for Eagle output - I have some at
http://www.markettos.org.uk/riscos/ethernet/ that I tried successfully with
gerbv 0.10
I mailed the developer about something Eagle related (can't remember what)
and got a speedy reply, so you could always try giving him your files to
test.

Most of these are answered in http://www.precma.com/informatica/tutorial.htm
Otherwise I do recommend the Eagle newsgroups - they are very, very, useful
and it's most likely that someone has already asked most of what you might
want to know.
