This is an interesting concept. Currently I can not test it because I
have your abstract-symbols branch of gschem not installed.
I think a plain solution is to use value attribute instead of plain text
for not fully static symbol labels, i.e.
value=7404
value=78xx
for Hex Inverter or Voltage Regulator.
I have seen this in symbols of Kai-Martin, while nearly all symbols
shipped with gEDA use plain, unflexible text labels like "7404" which
can not be moved around or changed to "74HCT04".
